He's Not Confused: What His Mixed Signals Really Mean

He's Not Confused: What His Mixed Signals Really Mean

He texts every day for a week, then disappears for four. He says he really likes you but never makes plans. He's sweet in person and cold over text. So you screenshot the conversation, send it to the group chat and ask the question every woman has asked at least once: "What does this mean?"

Here's the answer nobody wants to hear. He's not confused. And you're not either. Part of you already knows what his behaviour means. The truth is just inconvenient.

There's no such thing as mixed signals

When a man is sure about you, his behaviour is boringly predictable. He texts back. He makes plans. He follows through. There's nothing to decode, because there's nothing hidden.

When his behaviour is all over the place, that isn't a code you need to crack. Inconsistency is the signal. It usually means one of three things:

  1. He likes you, but not enough to put in consistent effort.
  2. He likes the attention, not necessarily the relationship.
  3. He's dealing with something (avoidance, other options, his own unresolved issues) that makes him unavailable right now.

In none of them is he ready to give you what you want. You don't need to know why he's inconsistent to know that inconsistency doesn't work for you.

The Translation Rule

Words tell you what he wants you to believe. Actions tell you what he's willing to do. When the two disagree, the actions win. Every time.

  • "I miss you" → Did he make a plan to see you?
  • "I want something serious" → Is he acting like someone in something serious?
  • "I'm terrible at texting" → Is he online, posting and replying to the group chat?
  • "It won't happen again" → Did it happen again?

Words aren't worthless. When they match his actions, they're lovely. But words without action behind them aren't a promise. They're a placeholder.

5 behaviours, decoded

1. Hot and cold

Intense attention, then distance, then intense attention again. It feels like chemistry, but it's a pattern. A man who wants you doesn't need to keep you guessing to stay interested.

2. Breadcrumbing

A like on your story. A "hey stranger" every few weeks. Just enough contact to keep you on the hook, never enough to move anything forward. Breadcrumbs aren't interest. They're him keeping an option open.

3. "I'm not ready for a relationship"

Believe him. He's not asking you to wait. He's telling you what he can give you right now, and it isn't what you want.

4. The 11pm text

"wyd" at 11pm, silence at midday. If he only shows up when it's convenient for him, you're not a priority. You're a plan B.

5. He comes back

He disappears, then reappears weeks later as if nothing happened. Ask yourself one thing: did anything actually change, or just his level of boredom?

Why it's so hard to walk away

If you've ever felt more attached to an inconsistent man than a consistent one, you're not broken. Psychologists call it intermittent reinforcement: rewards that arrive unpredictably are far more compelling than rewards that arrive reliably. It's the same principle that keeps people pulling the lever on a slot machine.

You never know which text will get a warm reply, so you keep checking, keep hoping, keep trying. Not because he's worth more, but because the uncertainty keeps your brain hooked. And the relief you feel when he comes back isn't love. It's your nervous system calming down after he caused the panic in the first place.

The one question that ends the confusion

Next time you catch yourself asking "what does this mean?", swap it for this:

"If he keeps doing exactly this for the next six months, am I happy?"

If the answer is no, you already know what to do. The meaning doesn't matter.

Ask once. Then believe the answer.

If you like him and want more, stop decoding and ask. In person or on a call, calm, not as an ultimatum. Say what you want first, then ask what he wants.

Instead of: "So… what are we? Haha, no pressure, I'm totally chill either way!"

Try: "I really like spending time with you, and I'm dating with intention. I'm looking for something exclusive. What are you looking for?"

A question can't scare off a man who wants to be there. It can only reveal one who doesn't.

Stop decoding. Start choosing.
